Report back from the 2009 KZN ADHD Seminar Click here for the full report Feedback from the Nylstroom (Modimolle) Seminar (17 April 2009) Click here for the full report Report back on our 15th Annual Conference (13th and 14th September 2008) The ADHASA Annual Seminar was once again held in collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand at Sturrock Park Hall on the Wits Campus. There were new speakers and topics as well as our most popular regular speakers who are always in demand. Delegates commented that we had the best speakers ever!! People appreciated the speakers' very broad knowledge of their subject and their professionalism. Feedback from the delegates showed that they enjoy being kept up to date on the medical and other research. At the same time they really appreciate all the practical tips. For some the highlight was the realization of the importance of treating the core condition rather than the symptoms; others were interested to learn the value of a multidimensional approach which takes the individual needs of the child into consideration. People commented that they received good value for money; adding that the food was excellent, and the coffee even better! As at all ADHASA events we sold supplements, oils, toothpastes, books and CDs. Memberships were also available. The tables also offered a variety – Games, Books, Glyconutrients, Calmavit, Equal Zeal. It's been interesting to see the differences in people attending the seminar over time. The very early seminars were specifically for parents but we also had a few teachers and headmasters - in the early nineties it was still very difficult to find information on the subject. While we were based at TMI our seminars focused mainly on the needs of school teachers. Now we provide information relevant to all, we find that in general we have equal numbers of parents and teachers. This is complemented by increasing numbers of therapists from all the different disciplines. We see ‘first timers' along with the delegates who make a point of attending the ADHASA conference every year. We welcome them all and try to accommodate everyone by providing some basic talks for those who are new to the field, and at the same time try to ensure that there is new research and information for our regulars. We're already talking about next year's conference! It promises to be a most exciting year and events will be reflected in the ADHASA Annual Conference 2009 – see you there! Bookings will soon be open. Additional feedback: It's always good to receive positive input from our members, which is most rewarding to us at ADHASA. Here is a comment from one of our members: I really appreciate all the work that has been done by you all and I have been able to help so many people through you. My adult children are well educated now and know where to find help if needed. It was always a pleasure to be a member and I wish you the best. Thank you. ElnaB. Report back from our Branch Coordinators Conference (21 February 2009) There are various reasons for our quarterly Branch Coordinators seminars: We have the opportunity to meet and get to know the them They are able to meet other coordinators and share experiences It's an opportunity to provide training (eg counselling), and give them the answers for when parents, teachers and caregivers approach them. We are working on providing far more support to Branch Coordinators who are unable to attend these meetings. Area Coordinators will ultimately be in direct contact with you, and with us. So far we have three people and so three areas covered. We would love to have all our Branch Coordinators join us for these events but realize that it's currently not possible. However, by going ahead with people who are able to attend, we are laying the foundations and working towards reaching out to each and every one of our Branches. The morning was devoted to Education with Sally Carstens (Eye Q) speaking about Nutrition with special reference to Tuckshops. This was followed by Robin Vanderplank's presentation “I'm glad you are born” and Danie Lodewycke's talk on approaching schools. Elza Buys spoke about her research project on Educational Psychologists and parents perceptions. After lunch Dr Shabeer Jeeva shared the broader approach to ADHD; ADHASA Matters then followed with suggestions for ADHD Awareness Day in September and then we focused on Area Coordinators. (Emile Wilmans is the Area Coordinator for Pretoria North to Witbank, Tzaneen etc. He is already in contact with Branch Coordinators in the region and will be assisting anyone who wants to open a new branch. Danie Lodewycke is the Area Coordinator for Johannesburg South to the Vaal area; and Robin Vanderplank (Durban Branch Coordinator) has agreed to become the Area Coordinator for KZN.) There are still many parts of our country to be covered, and we need more Area Coordinators. If you are interested in assisting please contact our National Branch Coordinator, Stuart Wilson, on 084 608 8896. The day ended with a presentation by Stuart Wilson and Robert Vanderplank on Psychiatric Nutrition. People came from Cape Town , Durban , Warmbaths and Gauteng . We thank them all for making it such a successful day.

ADHASA in the Media 2008 was a busy year for us and this was reflected in the interest of the Media. This included The George Mukhari Hospital (previously known as Garankuwa Hospital) inviting us to be interviewed for a series of programs on ADHD,Fokus did a show. There were articles in Longevity, Your Child, Discovery Health and Beeld. 2009 is such a special year for ADHASA that we'll be meeting with the media to share the exciting news. Already there has been an article in the Sunday times. In addition we've got people being interviewed on 16 Feb for the programme, Muvhango. Sometimes we miss the program or the article and only find out about it when people phone us referring to it. In fact it would help if we had someone to keep tabs on all articles in which we have assisted or in which they refer to us. If you are that person, please let us know.
